The Portiuncula (“Little Portion”)
Established February 2004
“When you see a poor man, a mirror of the Lord and His poor mother is held up to you.” St. Francis of Assisi
In St. Francis’ eyes, the poor, the leper and the outcast bore the image of Christ. As we follow in his footsteps, we learn from him to recognize Christ’s image in all our brothers and sisters (ref. Rule XIII).
Mission of the Apostolate:
- to feed the hungry/homeless and share with them the love of Christ
- to develop in us the love St. Francis had for the poor and to recognize the Crucified Lord in them
- to extend the love and fellowship we experience at our Franciscan gatherings to others less fortunate
- to grow in holiness
What do we do:
One volunteer prepares a sandwich at home and brings it to our gathering. We add to that food brought in for our fellowship time. At the end of the gathering, the food is blessed and another volunteer drives downtown and shares it with a homeless or hungry person.
“Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40
